Wing Hop Fung celebrates Suni Lee the first Hmong-American artistic gymnast who is the 2020/21 Olympic all-around champion. Both her parents immigrated to the U.S. from Laos. The 18 year old champion athlete from Saint Paul, MN, was a member of the teams that won gold at the 2019 World Championships and silver at the 2020 Olympic Games. She is the first Hmong American to compete in the Olympics as a gymnast.

The Hmong are an ethnic group living mainly in southern China (Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing and Guangxi), Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar.

The Hmong people have always used tea as medicine. According to history, Emperor Shi-zong Jiajing (1545 during the Ming Dynasty) sent the Imperial Supervisor of Guizhou Province to inspect military defense in an area known for thick forest mountains. Hundreds of inspectors became sick with the poisonous miasma when they came through the area, and most could no longer move. Seeing the suffering of the Ming officials, an old Hmong granny, with the family name of Xiang, picked up leaves from her hundred-year-old tea trees, boiled the leaves and offered them her tea. The Tea miracle happened: The suffering officials were soon recovered from their illness. To express his great appreciation, Lu Jie, the Imperial Supervisor of Hu-Guang Region and Guizhou Province, gave a piece of gold bar to the Hmong granny, and he recommended the Hmong tea as an imperial tribute tea in the Emperor’s Court.
