WINES OF THE WEEK

- NEW GERMAN RIESLINGS ARE HERE! -

At Wing Hop Fung, we certainly love our big, bold reds. But when it comes to pairing with Asian fare - whether it’s sushi or Sichuan – we turn to Rieslings as our top choice. Riesling’s fruity, delicate flavors, mouthwatering acidity, and (oftentimes) a touch of sweetness makes it the ideal partner for Asian dishes, especially spicy ones. We’d like to introduce you to two superb ones from Germany’s Mosel region, arguably the premier Riesling region in the world, to accompany your next Asian meal.

Monte Santoccio Amarone

Stephan Ehlen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2013
(Available in Westfield Santa Anita and Monterey Park)

Stephan Ehlen is a producer devoted to environmentally friendly farming and gentle treatment of hand-harvested grapes. The Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyards are planted on steep, south-facing slopes where the famous Mosel blue slate soils reflect sun and warmth onto the grapes, allowing for maximum ripeness. These rocky soils also impart exceptional minerality to the wines, keeping them balanced and complex.

When we first tasted this wine, we were so impressed that we bought as much as could so that we could share it with you. The wine offers up notes of tropical fruit, honey and saffron offset by bright minerality, a touch of Riesling’s signature petrol and a delicately sweet finish lifted by bright lemon and lime flavors. All in all this wine is a beautifully pure expression of the Riesling grape.

$19.98/btl ($1 off per bottle on 12 or more)

Whites from France - $10

France offers a wide array of interesting and tasty white wines. Many varietally-labeled New World wines such as California Chardonnay or New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc are inspired by their old world counterparts in regions like Burgundy, the Loire Valley, and the Rhone Valley. These fine whites are perfect on a hot day, and good with or without food.

International Rosés - $8

Summer is almost here and that means that it’s time to drink more rosé! Although pink wines are often dismissed as a “ladies wine,” real men (and women) do drink Rosé! And with good reason - these refreshing wines are delicious, smell and taste like watermelon, strawberries, peaches and white flowers, and pair extremely well with food, especially cheese. They also come in many styles from light and bubbly to rich and complex.

California Merlots - $15

Many of us still remember the scene from the movie Sideways when Miles angrily declared he wasn’t “going to drink any […] Merlot!” The film was influential enough that Merlot fell out of fashion and consumers turned their backs on one of the world’s finest grapes – one that produces plush, plummy, and fruity wines. The good news is that Merlot is back now and it’s better than ever! Come have a flight of these soft, juicy reds and see for yourself.

- Gainey Vineyards Merlot 2013 (Santa Ynez) | $16.98/btl

- Rombauer Vineyards Merlot 2012 (Carneros) | $28.98/btl
