Wines of the Week | May 16, 2016
May 18, 2016 2:41:33 PM
Wine has been a part of Italian culture for thousands of years, so it’s not surprising that there are quite a few sayings in Italian about good wine. One of our favorites here at Wing Hop Fung is “Amici e vini sono meglio vecchi” which means “Friends and wine improve with age.” There’s no friend quite like an old friend and there's no wine quite like one that has been carefully aged.
Like good friends, these wines – one from Piedmont, one from Tuscany, and one from Veneto - are enjoyable now, but can last a long, long time. Care for these wines the same way you treat your good friends and you will be amply rewarded when you enjoy them together.
Check out our selection available at our Westfield Santa Anita store:
Monte Santoccio Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico, 2011
WHF Price: $69.98
Hailing from the Veneto region, this Amarone is a blend of the grapes Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara. Like all Amarone, the grapes were dried for an extra concentrated richness before being pressed, fermented, and aged. This wine is a beautiful, deep ruby color with dark cherry fruit, blackberries, bittersweet chocolate, and a twinge of leather. Drink now or age for another 10-15 years.
G.D. Vaira “Albe” Barolo, 2011
WHF Price: $34.98
This wine is getting rave reviews! We were wowed by how delicious and approachabe this beautiful and reasonably-priced Barolo is drinking now. And it will still be amazing 15-20 years from now.
93 points Wine Enthusiast
*Editors' Choice* Enticing aromas of wild berry, pine forest, aromatic herbs, iris and a hint of leather emerge on this full-bodied red. The bold, chewy palate delivers crunchy red berry, anise white pepper, clove, and sage alongside youthfully assertive tannins and bright acidity. The ripe fruit seamlessly support the hefty alcohol level. (11/2015)
93 points Wine Spectator
A mix of eucalyptus, cherry, leafy and tar aromas and flavors are allied to a moderately firm structure in this balanced red. The finish is long and walks the line between fresh cherry, spice and earth notes. Best from 2018 through 2032. (4/2016)
Tenuta di Trinoro Rosso Toscana IGT, 2012
WHF Price: $199.98
Crafted by iconic winemaker Andrea Franchetti, Tenuta di Trinoro is appetizing and complex, crafted like a red Bordeaux. Earning a whopping 98 points from Vinous critic, Antonio Galloni, this vintage of the Trinoro is almost entirely Cabernet Sauvignon with a small amount of Cabernet Franc blended in. The wine is clean, pure and expressive with rich blueberries, blackberries, and toasty oak but with refreshing acidity and tannins that give it the backbone to age.
